I don't know what the problem is. I just printed from BrainStorm to CutePDF which outputs an Acrobat pdf file.

Can you print from Notepad to Acrobat? If you can't, then I think the problem is in your Acrobat print engine.

I cannot get Brainstorm to print to Acrobat. I'm using Brainstorm v 3.6 Rel 0. I thought I used to be able to print directly to Acrobat the same as most other programs. Any suggestions?

I would try choosing the 'alternative location' when installing BrainStorm. This will add the necessary DLLs right into the same directory as BrainStorm.

I am about to jump on an aeroplane - I'll let Marck know about your posting and see if he has any other ideas.

Subject: no luck with Wine
I just attempted to install BrainStorm in Linux (Ubuntu 7.10) with Wine. I wanted to report my results and see if any other user has had better luck.

Results:
1. Installation finally worked after telling Wine to install Brainstorm into /home directory, in lieu of c:/program files/BrainStorm.

2. However, after running Brainstorm through wine, I get a Runtime error "Micorsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error". Brainstorm then crashes and will not load.

My next test is to see if I can get BrainStorm to run through VirtualBox.

I hate to have to leave Ubuntu and go back to M$ Windows just to run Brainstorm. I would love to hear if anyone out there has been able to run Brainstorm under Linux.

I'm sure this comes up periodically, but things are changing. More people are running Linux and would like to run Brainstorm.

I purchased Brainstorm for Windows a long time ago, but I rarely use it.

I usually don't use Windows. On my desktop PC, I am currently running Linux Mint and Debian.

I have Windows XP on two laptops, but I am usually running Linux from a USB there. I run Puppy Linux and sometimes Wolvix.

I see that another of my favorites, thebrain, now has a Linux version, and I will probably be running that.

But I'd like to be running Brainstorm. Maybe I'll try it with Wine...

You're right. This is brand new. And we've changed nothing.

We're going to have to dig deep. But, in the meantime, for anyone else who's hit this, the temporary answer is to double click on a .brn file icon and select BrainStorm as the program to be used to open it.

Thanks for letting us know. We're on the case...

So I installed the latest version of Brainstorm onto a new computer. Therefore, obviously, I wasn't updating an old version with a new version.

Anyway, after installing the latest version (3.6 Rel 0), I noticed that none of my BRN Brainstorm files had a brainstorm icon in the File Explorer.

I then noticed that the file type BRN isn't associated with an executable in the File Types tab of the Folder Options dialog box. After associating it myself and rebooting, all is as it was with older versions on my old computer.

Speaking as someone who builds installers myself, I would hazard a guess that someone made a little boo-boo when building the installer for this most recent version.

David - that's absolutely right. We keep the file closed and only ask to open it on demand. That could be for a manual save operation or it could be for an auto-save operation.

The only thing I'll add is that I have never seen this error on any of my systems, no matter how badly I have broken the program while making changes or adding new features. It just doesn't happen here and there is no "recipe" for repeating the problem under clinical conditions to enable a fix. Without a way of reproducing the error on a development system, the chances of repair are none or less.

David,

I also have Copernic running in background. My virus scans, Zone Alarm (Friday pm) and AVG 7.5 pro anti Spyware (Sunday am) were not running. The only other background active program is the free version of Tiny Spell for spell checking.

I did just come out of a split window in Brainstorm, and had promoted an entry. I just don't remember if the other window was minimized when I got the error.

On a whim, I just eliminated the .brn file from being indexed by Copernicus, even though indexing is suspended during computer use and until two minutes of inactivity has passed. I'll let you know if this has any effect. Of course this assumes that the error will occur again.
