Sharing violation with Break Window /Break and Promote

Postby halh » Wed Dec 05, 2007 10:59 am

A sharing violation error pops up while I'm working in the split window. The only operation I could execute was Save As to save the file; on closing I could not execute Save Changes (I said No). Nevertheless, after closing the renamed file and re-opening the original file, all operations seemed correct; the work in the split window was correctly transferred to the whole model.

I'm sorry to hear this.

I did have a similar problem once or twice during testing (over a period of many months) and put it down to interference from other programs, although I couldn't see how. The thing is that I could never find a 'recipe' for it.

If you can provide us with a way of making it happen, I'm sure Marck will be able to track it down.

David,

I'll try to "break it" again. So far, after about an hour, I've been unsuccessful.

There is one major difference between then and now, I was executing a virus scan (Zone Alarm) in the background, and so there was a lot of disk activity.

I'll set up the virus scan again and see if the same phenomenon occurs.

Like you, Hal, I had a stab at reproducing it and couldn't.

David,

I tried to get the Sharing Violation while saving the file during a session of intensive disk activity; I re-ran my virus scan. After 10 attempts I was unsuccessful at reproducing the error.

Given the random and rare occurrence of the error, and the fact that the AutoSave frequency can be set as low as 1 minute, I view this as a "non-event"; not an intellutally satisfying solution but certainly a pragmatic one.

David,

EUREKA, I just managed to get the Sharing Violation in a controlled fashion.
With Brainstorm open, I typed a query into my Answer Bar, an on screen pop-out bar from Answers.com. I noticed, the error occurred while using this tool, at least 5 out of 8 times.

With further testing, I can reproducibly get this error with the Answer bar open, with or without text typed inside the bar. The error occurred 8 out of 8 times (I stopped counting) every 60 seconds (timed): 60 seconds after I close the Violation warning, another pops up, even as I type this note on a second monitor.

Trying to pin it down further, it apparently only occurs, at least within my patience span, when the file which had the original violation, is open in Brainstorm. I can send this file to you.

The question for us is: is this a BrainStorm problem or an Answers.com problem?

Feel free to email us through the usual channel with attachments. But I suspect it's far more likely to be another program behaving badly rather than BrainStorm.

David,

I've used answer.com again with other Brainstorm files without any ill effect, so the problem must arise with some as yet undetermined condition. I was so enthused to be able to reproduce the problem that I focused on the end result - to ensure I could reproduce it. UNFORTUNATELY, the "broken" Brainstorm file is the only one with the problem.

I'll pass for now.

I'm presuming that you made a copy of the 'broken' BrainStorm file and that the copy is working okay. If not, please get in touch and we'll help you out.
