Error message "the parameter is incorrect" when sa

Postby rlowrance » Sat Apr 01, 2006 1:29 pm

I'm a brand new user. I'm trying to save my brainstorm outline into my "My Documents" folder which is stored on my H: drive. When I click "save", I see the error message above.

How do I get around this?

This is a new one on us.

The message is coming from Windows. It suggests a drive fault, a massive file, the drive offline...

Are you on a network? Could it be blocking BrainStorm?

These are all guesses. Marck is more familiar with the workings of Windows than I am. He's not around right now, but he might add something.

Can you give us more detail please? - Windows version? Save the file to another drive, see if that's okay. If it is please tell us filesize. And maybe the filename you're using. Anything at all, in fact that might help us replicate the problem.

Thanks

More info needed

I really need answers to the questions about Windows versions and filesize. The only guess I can make from the error decription is that it could be a 'name' issue. Some weird character in the file name may be firing off a Windows error that the filename parameter is incorrect. We do check for filename legitimacy, but that doesn't mean I might not have overlooked some permutation.

Please let us know what Windows version you are using, the exact name you are trying to save the file with and any other details about filesize, disk type and any monitoring software that may also be having a say in the procedings.

As David said, this error is a new one on us, so there's no "stock answer" to help you (or us) out here.

My "My Documents" file is mapped to a network share that replicates when I log off. I am running these tests non logged onto the server, which means that I am running in the replica. Everything works fine except Brainstorm.

I start Brainstorm, create a new brainstorm file, make a few entries, name the "topic"/"top" level "brainstorm_test", and save it in "My Documents."

Now I quit brainstorm and relaunch it. I get this error message from the C++ Runtime library: "Runtime Error! [I wonder why Microsoft is so excited by this?] Program C:\Program Files\BrainStorm\Brain.exe. This program has requested the Runtime to terminnate it in an unusual way...." Remember that this error occurs during launch.

What next?

Good question. To which I don't have a ready answer.

Do you use the filename brainstorm_test.brn? If so, that's legitimate enough.

Hmmm. I wonder where BrainStorm is installed? If you installed it when you were network-connected and then disconnected there might be something going on there.

I think I'll send you an email and cc Marck. Since no-one else has encountered this problem, it seems pointless to have the diagnosis etc taking place here.

We can post a conclusion when we find one.

problem solved by re-install while connected

Postby rlowrance » Mon Apr 03, 2006 1:39 pm

I followed the suggestion to de-install and re-install while connected. This seems to have solved my problem.

Thanks!
