Screen scraping with Magic Paste and Magic Launch

Post by david » Fri Sep 29, 2006 6:32 am

Copied from 'thinkerlog':

Yesterday, I was asked to do some work on a new set of ‘effective communication’ guidelines. Since I already had a ‘How to Handle the Press 101′ series of blog posts, I decided to take them as a base.

The quickest way to grab the existing material was to visit the ‘overview’ blog, copy it, copy the links to the individual blog posts and then grab their contents one at a time from inside BrainStorm.

I often find myself doing this kind of ’screen scraping’ and ‘link following’ from inside BrainStorm, it’s a quick way to gather research material together, for example. Because I find it useful, I figured you might too, so I turned the process into a Flash movie screencast:

Firefox Add-in - A natural for Magic Paste

Post by halh » Fri Nov 10, 2006 8:51 am

Copy Plus, http://copyurlplus.mozdev.org/ , an add-in for Firefox is an ideal mate for Magic Paste. The copy options: URL, URL + Title, URL + Title + Selection.

This REALLY makes Magic Paste shine!!

:D

Firefox Add-in - A natural for Magic Paste -2

I forgot to mention another add-in, Aardvark, http://karmatics.com/aardvark/ , which allows you to "format" the browser page while viewing, to eliminate ads, columns etc, which would interfere with copying your selection.

In use: I turn on Magic Paste, use Aardvark to remove "extraneous" material, shut off Aardvark, highlight material, then Copy Plus (URL + Title + Selection). The URL is the last line of the last paragraph--Simply place the cursor at the end of the line before the URL, hit Control-Enter to separate the URL into it's own line (can now be Launched) and finally back-space to remove the blank line above the URL. Gather all the paragraphs as in David's film into the Title line.

Thanks for the notes. We have talked about Copy URL + in the 'Working with other programs' topic. It really is good, and I use it all the time.

Your Aardvark suggestion sounds similarly indispensible.

Thank you.

Shame Aardvark only works up to Firefox 1.6. I'm on 2.0 and run into this problem a lot.

David

I knew there was a reason why I was post-poning the upgrade to FireFox 2.0!

btw, I realized after your post, that I might have found the lead to 'Copy URL +" from this forum. But it just hit me, how much time it saved, after watching the "screen scraping" video.

I should have mentioned the most excellent "Copy Links" plug in for Firefox:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/605/

I discovered this after doing the movie.

Okay... here's a movie that demonstrates Copy Links with Magic Paste:
